May I, as a member of Barnaby Joyce’s electorate, express my agreement with your editorial (“Yes, Mr Joyce, you certainly have failed”, May 31). I have never understood why any voter, in Queensland previously or in NSW recently, could possibly have considered voting for this loose cannon.


I have no hatred for the man, but I do not want him representing me. As the editorial suggests, his private conduct is for him to account for, to those near to him, but his public conduct indicates instability. – Ian Usman Lewis, Kentucky

The current cap has been set at 190,000 since 2011, but the actual intake fell to its lowest level in a decade under the Coalition government  during the past financial year, with just 163,000 permanent arrivals.
