Syrian refugee brothers in Victoria receive global peace award

Two refugees who fled war-ravaged Syria for Australia have been celebrated with a tellurian assent prize.


Brothers Omar and Saad Alkassab, aged 20 and 23, were jointly awarded a Messengers of Peace Hero endowment – as partial of a general Scouts transformation – by Victorian Governor Linda Dessau on Saturday.


The endowment recognises their grant to formulating certain change in Australia by lifting recognition of a conditions in Syria and preventing radicalisation and extremism, Scouts Victoria said.





Omar says immature refugees who onslaught to find a clarity of belonging turn easy chase for a IS promotion machine.


“One of a many reasons people turn radicalised (in Australia) is since they feel like they don’t go to this nation … they lay online and they can turn brainwashed,” he told AAP.


“Nothing beats radicalisation like a clarity of community, and for me, Scouting has unequivocally helped.”


But a tellurian Scouts organization is not new to a brothers.


They were a partial of a tiny organisation of Scouts in Syria providing food and assist to those influenced by a polite war, that done them a target.

As a fight intensified, their Scout organisation was broken and leaders, including Omar, were kidnapped and tortured.


“I don’t even have a difference to explain what we experienced, we was propitious to be expelled though we had friends who disappeared,” he said.


After he was expelled in 2014, his family done a preference to rush to Australia and staid in Melbourne.


Omar and Saad rejoined a Scouts during Watsonia and share their practice during talks during schools, workplaces and a community.


Chief Commissioner of Scouts Victoria Brendan Watson says a Alkassab brothers are “remarkable.”


“Despite a mishap of losing their home and many of their possessions, and many of their friends and family, they continue to essay to be positive,” Mr Watson told AAP.


“Their summary is one of assent and village building.”
